California Pizza Kitchen - case essay - 2207 Words

Executive Summary California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) was founded in 1985 by Larry Flax and Rick Rosenfield with a vision of offering customers designer pizza at reasonable prices. CPK’s target market is geared towards affluent customers making $75,000 annually, and over the span of 2 decades the business was able to grow from a single location into 213 locations across 28 states and 6 foreign countries. CPK generates revenue from 3 main sources: company restaurants, franchises, and royalties. CPK stands out from its peers because it offers a compelling menu at low prices, does virtually no marketing, and currently generates profits using zero debt. Despite CPK’s positive growth projections, the food industry at the end of 2007 is†¦show more content†¦Even though spending is on the uptick, the industry is experiencing pressure from rising commodity and labor prices with the new increases in minimum wage instituted by the Bush Administration. Despite the financial pressure, CPK still continues to growth under challenging market conditions. Sales grew by 16% from 2005 to 2006 and royalties increased by 36%. Labor as a percentage of sales decreased from 36.6% to 36.3% in the same period. Even with all of these positive metrics CPK’s share price saw a decline in the last month by 10% to $22.10. The decline in share prices was a result of pressure from activist shareholders calling for a buyback of shares via a restructuring of CPK’s capital structure. To respond to this drop in share price I have proposed that we explore the possibility of levering up the company. This could be achieved by issuing debt and repurchasing CPK’s shares, however this is a big step for our business as we have never used debt financing in the past. I decided to analyze the costs and benefits of debt and compute the value of the firm by analyzing the effect of debt financing (and tax shield) at CPK’s WACC. Redeployment by Phil Klay Essay Example For Students

Redeployment by Phil Klay Essay In the short story collection, Redeployment, Phil Klay describes two conflicting worlds for the soldiers who came back from combat. One of the worlds is the battleground where they were isolated there for several months; the other one is their homeland they used to live. In the first story, Redeployment, Phil Klay discusses about how the vile of battleground still effect these soldiers. Even though they have come back from the Iraq War, they still couldn’t live as normal civilians. On the battleground, under uncountable death threats, both of their body and mind were set in a very nervous state. As a result, after they come back from battleground, they couldn’t fit into the suburb lifestyle they used to live. Unlike many other books about veterans which focuses on how veterans are helpless when they are back, Redeployment is focus on how these veterans are still thinking and acting like they were still on the battleground. Moreover, the inappropriate behaviors of the marine create a sense of absurd. This absurdity back in the mainland America along with the absurdity of the marines’ behaviors in the oversea background create a best reflection of the cruelness and meaningless of wars. The behaviors of the marine in the suburb seems very ridicules and strange through the perspective of civilians which indicates the influence of war on their states of mind. In the American Eagle Outfitter store, the first narrative â€Å"I† has made a speech between the while, red and orange state. He states that these people â€Å"who have no idea where Fallujah is† are in the white state which they don’t have to worry about their life at all (24-25 Klay). On the battlefield, some soldiers lost their mind under the huge pressure and entered the red state which they didn’t care about there own life anymore. However, most soldiers became the orange state in which they tried to identify every threat in the environment around them. Even though it is a safe strategy on the battleground, it becomes very ridicules in an American suburb mall to be in the orange state. Klay described this absurdity by saying that â€Å" In Wilmington, you don’t have a squad, you don’t have a battle buddy and you don’t even have a weapon† (24 Klay). As we know, these marines in their hometown are much safer than they are in action. However, even though the first narrative knows that he is safe here, he lists things that make him survive in the war and suburb doesn’t have instead of talks about how safe he are. Because he couldn’t directly switch from the orange state to the white state, he does comical things such as â€Å" You are stuck in an American Eagle Outfitters. Your wife gives you some cloth and you walking into the dressing room. You close and door and you don’t want to open again†. (24 Klay) Even though the behaviors of this veteran is very funny, these behaviors only makes people astonished about the scale that war twisted the people. On the other hand, the marine also does some similar absurd thing in both his home and on the battlefield, which shows the depth of the concussion of war. In the begin of the story, the writer writes â€Å"We killed dogs. Not by accident. We did it on purpose and we called it action Scooby† (1 Klay). The beginning of the story creates an absurdity. This absurdity emphasizes the cruelness of war. The war cause the metamorphosis of a dog person into some one could kill dogs without any purposes. In other words, the war makes people irrational and absurd. .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c , .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c .postImageUrl , .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c , .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c:hover , .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c:visited , .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c:active { border:0!important; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c:active , .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u36267969916ec5c96e2cbf38efa2cd3c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Music In World Culture EssaySadly, the influences of war is not only limited in the battleground. After the marine comes back to home, he shoots his own dog. When he shoots the dog, Klay lets him talks about his experience in the army â€Å"If I were to shoot you on either side of your heart, one shoot and then another, you’d have two punctured lungs, two sucking chests â€Å" (29 Klay). Even though killing a pet that will be suffered to death is a hard choice, the veteran isn’t talking about how hard he made the choice nor recalling the past experience with is pet. On the other hand, he is talking about the impact of the bullets. Moreover, even though he is trying to kill his pet, he is using â€Å"you† a second narrative in his speech which looks very offensive and looks like he kills his pet not only for ending its pain. In conclusion, in the short story, Redeployment, Phil Klay described the absurd behaviors of the veterans both on the battleground and in their homes. The absurdity of their behaviors justify the absurdity of the war which turns them from normal civilians into people who are difficult to fit into the society anymore. The author points out the cruelness of the war by presenting the changing on the state of minds of soldiers.

Victorian England In Hard Times Essay Example For Students

Victorian England In Hard Times Essay Charles Dickens is what we would all think of as the classic writer of Victorian England, and he is leading some people to refer to Victorian England as Dickensian England. In hard times Dickens talks about a northern industrial town called Coketown, although fictional we can work out it is based on the town of Preston which Dickens visited and quickly realised it was a terrible place to be. It is evident as you progress through hard times that the novel is meant to have a meaning, of which there are many, but I wish to focus on how Dickens focuses in on the working classes in the novel and reflects how life is for them. We will write a custom essay on Victorian England In Hard Times specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now After reading the novel the obvious candidate to support the above statement would be Stephen Blackpool, although there is no clear hero or heroine within the novel, it is plain to see that Blackpool is the closest thing to one. Why?  Well Blackpool, on the surface, is the classic perception of a plain normal worker in Victorian England, but as you delve deeper into him you see that he is more than that. First of all look at his name, Blackpool, a city on the east coast of England, it is now a pleasant seaside town by day and labours a vibrant nightlife but at the time of Dickens it was a dreary, dull, smoke stricken town with not much going for it, it was at the heart of the industrial revolution. Obviously this must have a meaning to Stephen and you realise as you read the novel that it has, he is just a normal worker, stuck in a dead end job, working each day for the next, but yet he gets on with it, no complaining, moaning, just gets on with the job that he is required to do an d in which sense you now see how he is a hero. He doesnt save lives, put out fires or anything like that but instead he just gets on with his life, no complaining, just does his job. He works in the midst of the industrial revolution in a black, smoggy, dark factory, in conditions that today would just not be allowed by law yet he carries on doing what he does with no complaining, his superior rules over him in a manner that is harsh and unnecessary yet he treats him with respect even though that is the last thing he deserves. Blackpool is a man of realities, even though others are perceived as this in the novel he is the only actual person that is. He is a man of realities in the sense that he doesnt see anything as getting better and he realises that, in his lifetime, conditions for workers are unlikely to change and so he knows he has to do what he has to do.  He is again looked at as a hero after Dickens uses the words:  somebody else had become possessed of his roses, and he had become possessed of the same somebody elses thorns in addition to his own This says that what has happened in Blackpools case is that he has had all his good times taken from him and has been left with only bad times, along with the other individuals bad times as well. Now if you think about what is related to the word thorns, Jesus, in a very much religious country it is plain to see that Dickens is hinting at Blackpool being a modern representation of Jesus. Jesus wore a crown of thorns and died on the cross to help us leave behind our sins, he suffered for our sins, and although Blackpool is not dying for our sins he is in fact representing all that work in the Dickensian era and that he takes the brunt of the pain just to earn money for those superior to him. .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e , .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e .postImageUrl , .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e , .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e:hover , .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e:visited , .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e:active { border:0!important; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e:active , .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4950efc8be11550a924379580c72d26e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Show how the tension between Jew and Christian Is brought to ahead in the trial scene of 'The Merchant of Venice' EssayThings that are also evident in the novel is the use of satire to put down all social classes, apart from the working classes, whom the author sees in a greater light and shows that he believes in them. Mr Bounderby for example is a member of the upper classes and quite fittingly Dickens enjoys mocking him, again through satire, the quote that springs to mind is  A man made out of a coarse material, which seemed to have stretched to make so much of him  Dickens uses this to show his opinion on the rising, greedy middle classes. Mr Bounderby is very large, which indicates greed, and very loud, which Dickens then mocks strongly. The quote describes Bounderby as being stretched out as to make room for all his big headedness, imagine for example a normal man with an unusually large head, although vague you can see how Dickens tries to portray that Bounderby believes strongly that he is well above the other classes in the pecking order which we later find out he deserves to be much lower.
